These are tiny spongy yeasty pancakey type things heavily doused in icing sugar. You could call them Dutch street food as often they are made and served on the spot from street stands or stalls. They are made in a heavy cast iron type pan that my mother would have called a gem scone pan. The stall we came across was run by a very wise man as he had parked his cart almost on the bike path and the wafting buttery smell nearly had cyclists falling off their bikes in anticipation !
While cycling through Holland we made a stop at a cheese farm where the farmers wife makes cheeses from cows milk that is literally straight from the cow...the milk is three minutes old, in fact. Eighty cows are milked in an hour so she makes a lot of Gouda. Each day she uses a different flavouring including garlic, truffle, pesto, pepper and cumin. There is also a cafe, a cheese shop and a bnb....so this is one busy farmers wife !
Don’t be fooled .... this is not coffee !!! It was a little unusual to be honest but worth a try... it is a soup called a lobster cappuccino....so basically a seafood bisque with a creamy froth on top !
Inner city grazing .... this is something I have come to expect in Morocco but I was not expecting it in Belgium. There was a big mixed flock of goats and sheep chomping away on the grassy verge between the river and a main road ... maybe it’s instead of a mowing man
This whale rising up out of the canal is four storeys tall and is made from 5 tons of plastic rubbish scooped out of the Pacific Ocean. The breaching sculpture was made for the 2018 Bruges Triennial. Rubbish in blue and white was collected for a four month period from different areas that included the shores of Hawaii and NY city waterways

On my cycle route today there was a quick stop at a very big strawberry farm where strawberries are grown year round in vast hot houses. Our stop was just a visit to the vending machine at the entrance where a punnet of strawberries comes down the shute after you deposit the required number of euros.So much for visiting the green grocer ! But I must admit they were full of flavour despite the unusual method of purchase
Bike and barge trip commences.....cycling 56 kms tomorrow...watch this space to find out if I make it !
Yesterday I spent a day touring World War 1 monuments and cemeteries...it was a day of learning and moments of deep horror and sadness. This beautifully sensitive ‘Brooding Soldier’ faces the way the first German chlorine gas attack came . 2000 mostly Canadian soldiers died here over two days as they tried to hold the frontline.
