Although we have cactus fruit literally by the barrow load on every street corner in Marrakech, I had not tried one till last week in Italy. The roads in Puglia were lined with the prickly pear plant, just like here in Morocco. They were laden with rosy coloured fruit...very alluring unless you know there are spiny barbs all over that rosy hued skin. Someone wearing gloves must peel the fruit or face great pain from prickly splinters. So at breakfast one morning I served myself one with the verdict being...I was nor excited by the seedy texture and there is not a huge flavour. Am I missing something ?
