When you have seen enough in the Safi souks then you can delve into co-ops and studios and see the pottery process firsthand, meet the potters if you are lucky and see lots of original pieces like that big platter I bought from Hachim. The clay used in Safi to make all their ceramics is a terracotta brown colour. Fes, also well known for its beautiful ceramicware uses a white beige coloured clay. Interesting to know when both cities are in the same country, shows how diverse soils can be. (Fes is inland and Safi by the sea.) Just from my brief experiences, I think the Fes pottery is still very traditional and that while Safi has some traditional there is lots more with a contemporary, modern and original take.
