On my first night in Munich we visited Haxnbauer, a very, very traditional Bavarian restaurant. Think wood paneling, enormous beer steins, and huge serves of food. Their speciality happens to be crispy skinned veal and pork knuckles we discovered . These roast slowly all day on the spit. If you order one or half or even just a few slices the plate is also piled high with dumplings or spaetzle or potatoes. It was here that my friend ordered a very healthy meal of trout but the trout fillets sat atop no less than twelve, yes 12, boiled potatoes. No lack of carbs here. When we walked in and saw so many tables packed with diners launching in to eat these whole roasted meat knuckles it reminded me a little , funnily enough, of medieval times . What we ate was great but so very filling . Lo and behold our charming waiter was Tunisian and we exchanged a little Arabic, little being the operative word here. My Darija is sorely lacking when it comes to discussing Bavarian fare !!
