I grew up thinking that gum trees aka eucalypts were Australian, or only found in Australia. I still get a surprise to find them elsewhere. They are in fact all over the world but for some reason I did not expect to see them in Morocco. I doubt I will see a kookaburra here but you never know !! It gives me a little jolt, a little pang, a tiny prickle of homesickness when I see them as they remind me so totally of Australia. They line so many streets, are in so many gardens, fill the parks and dot the rural landscape. Funnily enough I realise now it's these little random things, things that I have taken no notice of throughout my "Australian" life, that now create these tiny emotional and poignant twinges that gently tug my heartstrings.
