I am not actually in prison but I am living right opposite one. I can see the big wall and the barbed wire. If I crane my neck one way I can almost meet the gaze of the watch tower guard. If I crane my neck the other way I can see the big queues of women - mothers, wives, daughters, aunties - who take food and bedding to the inmates. These essentials are not provided . The prisoners in Australian jails lead a luxe life in comparison. One thing is for sure, the security is great with guards to the left and guards to the right so I feel totally safe. Very soon I will hang big outdoor cream canvas drapes so even my view of the walls will be minimal. My residence has 5 blocks and many of the residents are from the US , teaching at the American school here in Marrakech. The apartments are spacious with big double balconies. The location is actually very central and a fast 15 minute walk will get you to Zara and Starbucks in the heart of the new town, Gueliz. Thirty minutes by foot gets me to work or a taxi can do it in ten depending on how many donkeys are plodding slowly down the road. Take away the prison and the rent would double.
