Taking a horse and carriage is a lovely way to see Marrakech and a good alternative to a petit taxi if there is more than 3 in your party . The price must be haggled over just like a taxi and the traffic will be the same but it feels like a romantic step back in time. The carriages line up both near Place Jemaa El Fna and the Majorelle Gardens and clip clop through the Old Medina or the New Town or round the glowing pink city walls at sunset. The horses are inspected annually by a vet and generally look glossy and healthy. A horse drawn water cart goes around the city and fills up big cement water troughs at strategic spots as pulling a carriage in 45 C heat is thirsty work.
I have to say that I'm not a fan of horse-drawn carriages. There are some in Lunenburg, and I feel so sorry for the horses, especially on the hot days. I can't imagine how a horse feels pulling a carriage in 45 degree weather :-( Although I suppose in Marrakesh, everything that everybody does is always done in hot weather!
