When guests arrive at Riad Mur Akush, we offer mint tea and little cakes. This is a traditional Berber welcome. This mint tea is also known as Berber whisky. Whiskey or whisky is Gaelic for ‘water of life’ and this translates very well here in Morocco where mint tea is drunk by all and sundry, around the clock like water. The little cakes are tiny sticky pastries, very sweet, intricate concoctions of nuts and sesame seeds. But our refreshments often come with a twist. The ubiquitous Aussie rum ball can, on occasion, be found sitting amongst the petits fours. This rustic inclusion is made by me, without the rum of course. The appearance is met with surprised delight and is a sure fire conversation starter no matter what language the guests may speak. No one, on the whole expects to find an Australian working in the riad, let alone a rum ball served with their tea!!
I make rum balls at Christmas.... with rum! I'm looking to all those sticky sweet treats.
