Madrid's main square including its nine entryways dates back to 1619 and these red wooden but still palatial buildings with shutters and balustrades {237 balconies at last count } are on all sides. Under the porticoes are shops and cafes whilst the huge main open square is a stage for street performers and a meeting place for throngs of tourists. In the past it has been the grim site for executions and a bull fighting arena with apparently up to 50,000 spectators.
I was excited to see these murals [or are they are frescoes ??] and I have surprisingly discovered since my trip that they were done in the 1990's. They certainly fit right in with the muted colouring and faded patina. No matter their age, they look wonderful.
Thos murals/streetart/frescoes really do look interesting - and I've never heard of them or seen them before either!
