This pub is on the tourist trail for those lovers of spooks and ghouls. That is not me as I prefer the more tangible when I am being a tourist. It has stood here in Belgrave Square in London in one form or another since 1720. The ghost of a young soldier who cheated at a game of cards and was violently beaten to death apparently resides here. Visitors to the pub have tried valiantly to pay off his gambling debt and even from the outside you can see the ceiling is covered with bank notes in varying currencies. But this has been to no avail and odd and unexplainable occurrences have been documented like chairs rattling, smoke wafting, objects disappearing, meandering unknown footsteps heard and icy chills descending even in good weather.
Happily now it is also known for serving great food and boutique ales. I did not go in so I cannot lay claim to witnessing any phantoms or ghostly presences. Not even a curtain twitched anonymously !!!!
We went on a haunted tour one night when we were in Charleston, South Carolina. The stories are intriguing, but as for whether or not there are really ghosts wandering about... well, we didn't see any :-)
