Most of us like to window shop but I am at my happiest gazing into the windows of yes, cake shops. I can look at desserts, pastries and baked goods for many hours. You could say my hobby was cake spotting with some eating on the side included. It is a good hobby as it can be enjoyed at anytime, alone or with like minded companions. I spotted this Tarta de Santiago or Cake of St James in Notting Hill recently. As two members of my family have completed the 800 km pilgrimage that ends in Santiago this dense almondy cake has special significance. It is always topped with powdered sugar and imprinted with the Cross of St James and has a history dating back to the Middle Ages. My pastime often leads me to experiment at home but I think in this case I will wait to visit Spain to try this beautiful torta.
Some foods are easier to buy than make :-) How do you not buy everything you see in the shop windows?!
