I was invited to attend a consular evening in Rabat for Australians living in Morocco. That's me for now I thought , so I set off. Rabat is the capital of Morocco and a 4 hour train trip from Marrakech. The station - Gare du Train - is new, contemporary and immaculate. The obligatory golden arches of McDonalds are well entrenched here as you can see. This is a very modern part of town that includes KFC, Zara, H&M, Adidas etc. The ancient Medina is only about a 20 minute walk from this stark newnesss.
Immaculate station and train and unlike most places in the world the train left on time. Mine is the red train just pulling in. I sat in a first class air conditioned compartment chatting {my french is outrageously apalling but I am trying !!!! }with other passengers. Cost of ticket one way was about $24.00. It would have been double that in Australia and the train would have been dirty and delayed. I had my camera ready just in case but I knew there would be little to see on the trip but the endless stoney dry plains and prickly pear so typical of rural North Africa.
We caught the train from Fes to Marrakech and loved it too. But we did heed the warnings not to eat the train food and took our own!

I took the train from Marrakech to Casablanca & was shocked to see how nice the train station was!!! Several people told me to buy a first class ticket so I did -- loved the ride :-) Gotta love trains!
