A 40 minute bus ride then a 10 minute taxi ride took us rapoidly out of Salzburg to Konigsee, an area of extreme beauty. Our hotel is the one above, Hotel Schiffmeister and it is right on the lake where the boats pull in.
You can see the big, orange luge run at the back of this picture. The water is exactly this colour and so clear you can see fish.
To the right of this picture is a big row of incredibly old wooden boat houses.
We return here on the final day of our hike so I would love if time permits to take a trip on one of these boats. The lake is very beautiful but often shrouded in mist.
Masses of tourists come here for daytrips to take boat rides and hike in the area. Luckily their monster buses have to park out of the immediate area. There are loads of shops selling souvenirs but many also sell the Bavarian national costume [think dirndls and lederhosen] and it is very common to see both men and women wearing it. Sports shops selling hike boots and alpenstocks are big here too.
Looks like a charming town :-) Too bad it's such a tourist draw. Reminds me a bit of the towns in Alaska that are teeming with tourists when the cruise ships come into port. I know it's good for business, but it would be nice to see these lovely little spots less crowded. Have fun hiking!
