Mashed potatoes are a universal comfort food surely and are much loved in this household. I have seen them consumed straight from the pot, served as a side and as a steaming bowl enjoyed alone except for lashings of butter and black pepper under this very roof. This week I did the usual mash thing then added cauliflower and a few token broccolis. These were precooked and mashed easily into the creamy potoato. It was wonderful especially with extra tasty cheese on top. I read a review on this recipe that it was fabulous used as a topping for cottage or shepherd's pie and that would be so true. Those shepherds will be in their element if they taste a pie with this on top !!
Great idea with the extra veg and cheese. A sprinkle of cooked bacon and you would have a meal, there!

I've got a recipe for Lentil Cottage Pie that is very popular with said shepherds...

There are some shepherds here who might try it - they've always been tolerant of cauliflower even when they were little because it isn't "green" - they might draw the line at broccoli though!
