Today the forecast was for a month's worth of rain in a day !!! Isn't that just awful ! Anyone going to the races would have needed gumboots ! It was the perfect day to spend on the couch catching up on dvd's listening to the rain pounding on the roof. I went on a shopping spree instead which is a great way to forget about the weather except when it came time to leave and we had to make a mercy dash through puddles and the massive amount of precipitation to reach the car.
I know it is still spring but I have spotted my favourite summer fruits already in the supermarkets and fruiterers. Ah the bliss of seeing the reappearance of nectarines, both white and yellow. They would be my all time favourite fruit and for me are even better than peaches. I am not mad about eating the furry skin of a peach but I can launch into a nectarine, skin and all and I just adore them with all their delectable juice .
Very local colour, in fact. These are in my front yard. I have four of these flowering plants, brilliantly blooming at the moment. I have no idea of their name but they do remind me of a pink flower called 'pigface' that grew in the garden of my childhood home. It is likely they are related. They look so fabulous when they are 'awake' as these little babies shut their petals up tight when night falls only to re open when the sun shines on them in the morning !!
The lemons show no sign of abating. I have given them away by the bagful and friends have come and picked them endlessly. The tree seems still laden plus there are now masses of blossoms heralding more fruit to come. I did empty a bag of citrus food around the base of the trunk at the week end in case it was in dire need of nutrients after such prolificism - if there is such a word !!
I was sent this exquisite little gift from France. My travelling daughter21 aka the snowbunny sent it to me and I just adore it. Apparently these little bracelets made from pretty fabric with charms added to them are all the rage in Europe. The little silver charm on mine says 'maman' so no one can borrow it !!
TODAY - 2 achievements !!
Firstly I ran a huge 13.6 kms - my greatest distance so far and secondly got the garage painted inside - 2 coats even - ready for it to become a bedroom.
Last night I attended the Valedictory Dinner , a very large function. The food was great considering the huge amount of guests sitting down together and needing to be served roughly together. I remember the good ole days when a sit down function meant chicken for the ladies and red meat, perhaps a steak, for the gentlemen. The first course was possibly a seafood cocktail and dessert was fruit salad, tinned, with vanilla icecream. Instant black coffee and mints would have been the last hurrah - all so, so ordinary looking back. Last night we were served a cold chicken terrine or a vegeatrian tartlet as entree.
And how attractively presented with a ' grissini breadstick' balanced so delicately.
Here is the very happy and hungry valedictorian at dinner. She looked so beautiful. Below is the vegetarian option - it too looked beautiful. I had the terrine but the vegetarians were well looked after.
The main course choices were these little rolled lamb loins served on a pea mash with a big lamb shank tortellini or a barramundi fillet. I chose lamb and enjoyed it. I fear the barramundi has a high level of lead and while nicely presented I do not like to see that silvery skin though I understand it would have to be left on the help retain moisture.
No dessert was served which shocked me a bit . The obligatory chocolate mint appeared with percolated coffee though. All in all a good night was had by all and my head hit my pillow just a few minutes before midnight.
