Sankranti is a solstice festival celebrated under different names and in lots of ways across India on January 14. It is both a religious and seasonal celebration. In Karnataka where I am just now, it is also considered a harvest festival. During this time the livestock, especially the cows, are blessed and dyed yellow with turmeric water. They may wear garlands of flowers and have their horns and hooves painted. For fun this year it seems other colours are being used to decorate the animals and I saw green and pink sheep, orange goats and blue oxen. Happy Sankranti everyone !!
