This blog post is for my friend J who loves doorways. I, too, love thinking about what lies behind front doors. Entrances are so different in every country. Every house in Australia that I have lived in has had the classic fly wire screen or a heavy duty security door, neither which you will find in Morocco. In England the doors have knockers and mail slots and are often brightly painted and make quite a statement whereas In Australia we have door bells and a letter box in the front garden. And things are different again here in the modern part of Marrakech as everyone lives in apartment blocks with terribly ordinary doors and the concierge greats visitors and deals with the mail. Doors in the old medina deserve their own post as they have a hugely important cultural and historical story behind their design.
