Although I underook this amazing tour several days ago, I am struggling to blog about it as I doubt whether I can do it adequate justice. It was not a tour but a progressive dinner or really as I took it at 1pm, it was a progressive lunch. It also runs at 6 pm so you have a choice of times but in either case , do not eat beforehand. Amanda and Yousef have found a niche market as no one else here in Marrakech runs a food tours and they really do an amazing job. Between them, English, French and Arabic is spoken so all bases are covered. We met outside the post office at the Place Jemaa El Fna and our first stop was to learn about the traditional lamb tanjia. It has six ingredients and cooks for about 8 hours in an earthenware pot.
Then we ascended a winding staircase to a tiny cafe where we sat and ate this dish plus another slow cooked lamb dish that comes with cumin and salt for seasoning. It was accomanied by warm bread and mint tea. The cafe does a big business in takeaway. I think you can provide your own pot.
The other slow cooked lamb dish involves many hours in an amazing old, old underground oven .
The ovens take a lot of firewood - here it all is stacked up against an ancient and beautifully tiled wall.
